Welsh lovespoon

This one of my first carvings ever. It is a Welsh lovespoon.

From Wikipedia ;
Carving love spoons is a Welsh tradition.
The love spoon is thought to have originated from the "cawl" (soup or stew) spoon. Over generations, decorative carvings were added to the spoon and it lost its original practical use and became a treasured decorative item to be hung proudly on a wall.
The earliest surviving example, displayed in the St Fagans National History Museum near Cardiff, dates from around 1667, although the tradition probably dates back long before that.
The love spoon was given to a young woman by her suitor. It was important for the girl's father to see that the young man was capable of providing for the family and woodworking.
Sailors would often carve love spoons during their long journeys, which is why anchors would often be incorporated into the carvings.
Certain symbols came to have specific meanings: a horseshoe for luck, a cross for faith, bells for marriage, hearts for love, a wheel supporting a loved one. and a lock for security, among others. Caged balls indicated the number of children hoped for. Other difficult carvings, such as chains, were as much a demonstration of the carver's skill as a symbolic meaning.
Although the Welsh lovespoon is the most famous there are also traditions of lovespoons in Scandinavia and some parts of Eastern Europe, which have their own unique styles and techniques.
Today love spoons are given as wedding and anniversary gifts, as well as birthday, baby gifts, Christmas, Valentine's Day gifts and just because. They are now mostly seen as a folk craft.

This spoon is 15"x4"x1".
For a first real carving project this was a little more than I had expected in that I decided to do it in Red Oak and had few tools at the time. In these pictures it is about 98% done. I just need a little more shaping on the bowl and a little clean up at the junctions.

Haven't had a lot of time this week to do much carving because this is my birthday week. The first panel of Extension is coming along nicely.

Vascular: Neurosis

about 1/4 of the way finished (if that)
I guess for now I am calling this Vascular 2.This is the first plate of two. It measures 12" x 4" x 1". When completed it will be 12" x 4" x 2". It is made of Basswood and is different from Vascular 1 in that each plate is woven rather then having the appearance of being woven.
roughing in
The main challenge for me in this piece is that, Basswood being very soft for a hard wood, is clearing the gaps without breaking each vein. As you can tell in the above picture I haven't been keeping my blades as sharp as they should be and so I am getting a lot of rough cuts (the staircase effect on the lower right side).
first gap cleared
I started using 220 grit sand paper to shape the veins due to their fragility.

Vascular:Prototype

Bloodwood and Purpleheart
5 1/2" x 5 1/2" x 1/2"

This was merely a proof of concept. The two wood are their natural colours and with a little Tung Oil added the colours really popped. Despite being hardwoods the Purpleheart tends to cleave very easily which makes working on such a thin piece difficult.

Banksia Pod

This is a Banksia pod. I originally bought this on on a whim. People usually turn these into various things but I had the bright idea of caving it...duh.

Vascular defined

vascular (ˈvæskjʊlə)— adj
biology, anatomy of, relating to, or having vessels that conduct and circulate liquids: a vascular bundle ; the blood vascular system

The Vascular project was inspired by the intricacies of the ever changing mind. Feelings inward and outward. Loving & being loved, hating & being hated, creating, dreaming, living, reaching out & reaching in.
